Jim Whalley – ‘’Give them Wings: The Joy of Flight and the Creation of Innovative Managers”

Jim Whallley was appointed the Chief Entrepreneur for South Australia by the Premier in 2018. His task is to advocate for
economic growth and provide independent advice to the Government on innovation and entrepreneurship policy as Chair of
the Entrepreneurship Advisory Board.
Prior to this appointment, Jim was co-founder and Chairman of the Nova Group. In the last decade this company has grown
rapidly and is now one of Australia’s largest privately owned Defence Professional Service Providers. The Group has been
one of the top 20 fastest growing companies in South Australia for four consecutive years, has won a number of business
awards and is recognised as one of the most innovative companies in Australia.
Jim is a former Air Force fighter pilot and test pilot, with over 6,000 flying hours on more than 40 types of aircraft ranging from
helicopters and jet transport aircraft to high performance fighters. He is a graduate of the Royal Air Force Empire Test Pilots’
School and holds an MBA from the University of Adelaide and a Science degree from the UNSW.
Jim is active in a wide range of business forums. He is a Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts, a member of the Sir Ross
and Keith Smith Fund Advisory Committee, and the Council of the University of SA. Jim retains a strong personal interest in
aviation as a civilian pilot and flies, flight tests and displays a range of antique, war bird and experimental aircraft and
helicopters. Jim is married to Melinda and they have six children.
