SUMMARY:Tim Fischer AC - 'Tango in Trains and Travel'
DESCRIPTION:Tim Fischer was born at Lockhart on May 3rd1946.  He was educated at Xavier College in Melbourne and conscripted into the Australian Army from 1966 – 1969\, serving with the 1 RAR in both Australia and the Vietnam War\, before returning to the family farm at Boree Creek in southern NSW. \nTim was elected to the NSW State Parliament in 1971\, where he served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and became National Party Whip. He resigned from State politics in 1984 and\, in the same year\, was elected to the Federal Parliament as the Member for Farrer.  During his time in the Federal Parliament\, Tim held a number of senior trade and resource based portfolios; he was elected Leader of the National Party and served as Minister for Trade and Deputy Prime Minister in the Howard Government from 1996 – 1999. \nTim retired from politics in 2001\, served as Chair\, Tourism Australia from 2004 – 2007 and Australian Ambassador to the Holy See in Rome from 2009 – 2012.  Tim is currently the Chairman of the Global Crop Diversity Trust\, which has a seed vault in Svalbard\, Northern Norway.  Tim is now a successful book author; his other interests include family\, farming\, charity work\, biking and bushwalking in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. Tim lives at Mudgegonga with his wife Judy and their two sons.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Samantha Hepburn is the Director of the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Law at Deakin University.  Samantha has extensive experience researching and teaching in natural resources law including mining and energy law\, environmental law and property and land law.  Samantha has written numerous books\, including a Mining and Energy Law book for Cambridge University Press as well as many scholarly articles and opinion pieces in her fields of research.  Samantha regularly contributes to public discussion on media forums including radio national\, radio 5aa and The Conversation (where she has published over 35 articles)\, government committees\, international workshops\, conferences and community forums on the issues relevant to a transitioning energy landscape.   Samantha was a member of the Victorian Auditor General Committee examining unconventional gas development for the Victorian Parliamentary Commission.  She has presented numerous submissions to the Senate Economic References Committee regarding the Adani Coalmine and the National Australia Infrastructure Fund and in 2017 was a delegate for the Japan-Australia Dialogue on Energy Regulation.

We are fortunate to have Liz as our speaker as the CEO Douglas Gautier has commitments overseas. \nLiz is a professional arts administrator and performer\, with over 30 years experience in project management\, programming and fundraising. In 2010 Liz became the Development Manager at the Festival Centre and in 2012\, she became Director of Programming\, Development and Venue sales. She is on the Board of Directors for CASE Asia Pacific (Council for Advancement and Support of Education)\, is a Director of the Adelaide Festival and serves on the Arts Industry Council. She is involved as a volunteer and consultant for several not for profit organisations. Liz speaks regularly on fundraising\, corporate sponsorships and arts management and serves as a mentor for young fundraising professionals.

DESCRIPTION:Margot Forster is a graduate of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies\, with a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Studies. Ms Forster has held a number of important positions during her career\, including Base Commander RAAF Base Williams\, Commanding Officer Combat Support Unit Williams and Chief of Staff of the Aerospace Operational Support Group. In 2012\, Ms Forster was promoted to Group Captain and appointed as Director\, Pathway to Change. Margot then took up the position of Chief of Staff Air Force Personnel Branch and in 2015 she was promoted again and appointed to the position of Commandant\, Australian Command and Staff College. \n  \nMs Forster has received a number of awards and commendations during her career\, including a Conspicuous Service Medal in 2009. In 2016 Ms Forster retired from the Air Force to take up her present position as Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Teaming Centre.

SUMMARY:Professor Emeritus Rosemary Ryall BSc (Hons)\, PhD\, DSc. - "Gifts of the Body and the Needs of Medicine"
DESCRIPTION:Professor Emeritus Rosemary Ryall retired in 2010 from her position as Chief Medical Scientist and Professor of Urological Research in the Department of Surgery at the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University\, South Australia. \n  \nRose’s initial involvement in the urodynamics service of the Urology Unit developed into a role oriented more to basic urological research\, with her primary interests focused on biochemical factors\, especially proteins\, affecting the formation of human kidney stones. She has delivered 50 invited international lectures and published more than 190 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. In recognition of her published work in the field of urolithiasis research she was awarded a Doctorate of Science from the Australian National University in 1998 and a Lifetime Achievement Award by her international stone colleagues in 2012. \n  \nIn addition to her scientific interests\, for many years Rose has been intensely concerned with the ethics of human experimentation\, especially that involving the use of human tissues or products\, and has often been asked to speak on the ethics of medical research. She was a member of the Flinders Medical Centre Clinical Research Ethics Committee from 1990 until her retirement in 2010\, and in 1997 was a founding member of the Human Research Ethics Committee of Calvary Hospital\, to which she still contributes.

SUMMARY:Dr Jeff Nicholas KJSJ - "The Streets of Adelaide"
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jeffery Howard Nicholas considers himself to be a quintessential South Australian. Born in Mt Gambier at the beginning of World War II\, his early education could only be described as truncated\, as the family moved from one government appointment to another. Moving gave him a wide appreciation of country life before he finally settled in Adelaide to further his education. \nMatriculating from Adelaide Boys High School\, Dr Nicholas attended Adelaide Teachers College and The University of Adelaide\, with appointments to follow at Mt Barker High School and Gilles Plains High School before he taught Health and Physical Education at Salisbury Teachers College. After eventually completing a Doctor of Education at Boston University in 1981\, Dr Nicholas transferred to Sturt College of Advanced Education which became part of Flinders University\, from where he ultimately retired in 1995 as Head of Health and Physical Education. \nHis passion for South Australian history grew in retirement. Dr Nicholas has a passion for South Australian history\, which grew during his tenure as President of the Pioneers Association of South Australia. \nHis debut three-volume book Behind the Streets of Adelaide — Born of Reform: A pantheon of dissent is to be published by Torrens Press and launched on 23 May 2016.

He moved to Australia in 1989 to work for News Corp Australia\, where he held a number of senior positions including Hong Kong correspondent and Editor of The Weekend Australian. \nCater is the author of The Lucky Culture (HarperCollins 2013); he edited The Howard Factor (MUP 2016) and A Better Class of Sunset (Connor Court 2014) and was an advisor on the ABC documentary\, Howard on Menzies. He is the series Editor for the R.G. Menzies Essays. Nick is currently working on a second book for HarperCollins\, to be published in 2018.

She is also interested in defining the detection and signaling pathways for protein – particularly L-glutamate. A third area of interest relates to nutrition in the elderly and Natalie has developed a project with Meals on Wheels Inc. South Australia. \n  \nNatalie has presented at numerous local\, national and international meetings; authored 55 peer-reviewed papers/reviews; written 2 book chapters and has been a major contributor to the CSIRO Low-Carb Diet book.

He was a señor investigator and manager with ASIC from the early 1990’s until his retirement in 2009. \nHis Excellency was awarded an Australian Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001 for service to the advancement of multiculturalism and a Companion of the Order of Australian in 2016. \nHis Excellency was appointed Lieutenant Governor of South Australia in 2007\, and on September 1st 2014 he was sworn in as Governor of South Australia.

Readings from Sir Hubert’s writings reveal an endearing man of science and spiritualism.

DESCRIPTION:Julian Burnside AO QC \nJulian Burnside is a barrister based in Melbourne.  He specialises in commercial litigation.  He joined the Bar in 1976 and took silk in 1989. \nHe acted for the Ok Tedi natives against BHP\, for Alan Bond in fraud trials\, for Rose Porteous in numerous actions against Gina Rinehart\, and for the Maritime Union of Australia in the 1998 waterfront dispute against Patrick Stevedores. He was Senior Counsel assisting the Australian Broadcasting Authority in the “Cash for Comment” inquiry and was senior counsel for Liberty Victoria in the Tampa litigation. \nHe is a former President of Liberty Victoria\, and has acted pro bono in many human rights cases\, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees. \nHe is passionately involved in the arts.  He collects contemporary paintings and sculptures and regularly commissions music.  He is Chair of Fortyfive Downstairs\, a not for profit arts and performance venue in Flinders Lane\, Melbourne\, and Chair of Chamber Music Australia. \nHe is the author of a book of essays on language and etymology\, Wordwatching (Scribe\, 2004) and Watching Brief\, (Scribe\, 2007) a collection of his essays and speeches about the justice system and human rights.  He compiled a book of letters written by asylum seekers held in Australia’s detention camps.  The book\, From Nothing to Zero was published in 2003 by Lonely Planet.  He also wrote Matilda and the Dragon a children’s book published by Allen & Unwin in 1991. \nIn 2004 he was elected as a Living National Treasure.  In 2009 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia. \nIn 2014 he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize. \nHe is married to artist Kate Durham.

DESCRIPTION:On 19 February 2013\, it was announced that the Honourable Justice Lander would be South Australia’s first Independent Commissioner Against Corruption. \nThe Hon. Bruce Lander QC\, as he now is\, was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of South Australia in March 1969. \nHe practised as a solicitor until 1981 when he signed the Bar Roll. In 1986 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. \nIn November 1994 he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia. He remained a Judge of that Court until he was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia on 14 July 2003. \nIn January 2004 he was appointed an additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. In December 2008 he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island. \nIn November 2005 he was appointed a Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for a term of five years and was reappointed in 2010 for a further term. \nIn April 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law by Flinders University for his contribution to the law and the university. \nBruce Lander resigned all his judicial appointments to take up his current appointment on 2 September 2013. \nHis tenure as Commissioner is for a period of seven years.

DESCRIPTION:OUR SPEAKER Vincent Ciccarello has been actively involved in classical music for almost 30 years. \nHe studied piano and musicology at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide and became active in arts admin as manager of Elder Hall\, the Adelaide Chamber Singers and Elder Conservatorium Youth Orchestra\, before taking up the role of Orchestra Resources Manager of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (1990-1994). He left the QSO in 1994 and was appointed Head of Opera and Classical Music at the Melbourne-based theatrical agency\, Performers Management. He became a trustee of the Brian Stacey Memorial Trust in 1996. Vincent subsequently owned and operated Fanfare Artist Management\, representing classical music and music theatre artists across Australia and New Zealand (1994-2004). Between 2004-2006\,Vincent worked as a journalist at the new Independent Weekly newspaper in Adelaide\, with a special interest in arts\, culture and lifestyle. From 2006\,he worked as a journalist at the University of South Australia and Flinders University with editorial responsibilities for various university print and online news publications. Vincent was Chairman of the Australasian classical Music Managers’ Association from 2010 to 2014\, when he resigned to accept the position of CEO of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Over the course of his career\, Vincent has written program or CD liner notes for Opera Australia\, all the State Symphony Orchestras\, ABC Classics and Universal Music. In addition to contributing to Soundscapes magazine \,he has also given pre-concert talks for the Queensland\, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras and the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Adelaide.

DESCRIPTION:David Sefton is set to become the first Artistic Director to deliver four consecutive Adelaide Festivals after being offered the opportunity to curate the 2016 festival. \nAdelaide Festival Chair\, Richard Ryan AO\, said: “Since David moved to Adelaide in 2011 the board has been impressed with his shrewd mixture of bold programming and his determination to deliver a unique festival that stands as the premier Arts event in Australia”. \nDavid began his career as a publisher\, music journalist and promoter\, based in his hometown of Liverpool. In 1993 he founded the annual Meltdown Festival at London’s Royal Festival Hall\, now credited with re-writing the rules by putting musicians in charge of programming. \nThe last decade he spent heading the nine-month long Arts Festival\, UCLA Live\, in Los Angeles\, an annual international theatre festival alongside a program of music\, dance and spoken word. David is also the recipient of awards including the Chevalier des Artes et Lettres\, presented by the French President in May 2010\, Time Out’s award for outstanding contribution to the Arts (twice) and the LA Weekly Outstanding Contribution to Theatre Award. \nDavid will highlight some of the outstanding performances coming to the 2016 Adelaide Festival\, 26th February to 14th March.

SUMMARY:The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry at the Burnside Civic Centre SUNDOWNER
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry is currently touring the world and will be on display. There will also be a talk about it given by its travelling curator. \nA project to involve communities around the world in celebration of Scottish heritage and culture\, the people and places which connect Scotland to its global diaspora. \nScots have migrated all over the world and have often had a profound impact on the areas where they settled. This project brought together stories from more than such communities\, documenting their Scottish connections in more than 300 embroidered panels. It is a remarkable and heart-felt homage to the determination\, courage and achievement of Scottish migrants and their descendants across the centuries. \nSince its completion in 2010 it has attracted thousands of visitors as it tours the country and the world. Its enormous success is due to the passion of the volunteers who created it\, the astonishing quality of the artwork and embroidery\, and fascinating history it depicts.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Leanna Read is South Australia’s fourth Chief Scientist and the first woman to hold the position. A renowned biotechnologist\, she brings a wealth of executive\, board and investment experience in technology-based businesses. \nIn addition to her Chief Scientist role\, Leanna chairs the Cooperative Research Centre for Cell Therapy Manufacturing and is a member of the SA Economic Development Board\, as well as the Council of the University of South Australia.  She is also a member of BioAngels which supports early-stage life sciences businesses\, and a Board Director of Biosensis Pty Ltd. \nA biochemist by training\, Leanna has led a number of successful research and commercial ventures\, including the Cooperative Research Centre for Tissue Growth and Repair\, a successful commercially focused CRC. She was also the founding Managing Director and CEO of Adelaide biotechnology company\, TGR BioSciences Pty Ltd from 2001 – 2012. \nLeanna is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering\, and of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.  She has also received a number of awards\, including the 2006 South Australian of the Year (Science and Technology) and the 2011 Central Region winner of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Technology Category. Dr Read has published over 90 scientific papers and has received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia. \nAs Chief Scientist\, Leanna provides independent advice on science strategy and policy to the State Government\, as well as to the research and industry sectors.  In particular\, she plans to foster science excellence\, help link the State’s researchers with industry\, and improve the quality and uptake of STEM education. \nGiven that 70% of our research is done in the public sector\, Leanna puts high priority on developing a more entrepreneurial culture in researchers\, as well as transforming the State’s economy to more high value-add enterprises.
