DESCRIPTION:Peter Monteath is a Professor of History at Flinders University in Adelaide.  He was born and grew up in Brisbane before attending the University of Queensland\, Siegen University (Federal Republic of Germany) and Griffith University. \nProfessor Monteath has taught previously at The Universities of Queensland\, Western Australia and Adelaide as well as at Griffith and Deakin Universities.  Peter has also been Adjunct Professor at The University of St. Louis Missouri and the Technical University of Berlin\, where he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. \nCurrently Peter teaches modern European history and writes about various aspects of European and Australian history\, with a particular interest in things German.  Away from Flinders\, he is President of the History Council of South Australia\, a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and a Trustee of the History Trust of South Australia. \nPeter’s Interests include a distant admiration for Hertha BSC (a top-tier German Football Club)\, badminton\, and unabashed nostalgia for the glorydays of the Brisbane Lions.

SUMMARY:Professor John Blaxland - "Intelligence Reforms: Progress and Pitfalls"
DESCRIPTION:John Blaxland is Professor of International Security and Intelligence Studies\, Director of the ANU Southeast Asia Institute and Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU\, overseeing its three degree programs. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales. In addition\, he is a member of the ANU Academic Board as well as the Australian Army Journal editorial board and an occasional commentator in the media. He is a US Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative grant recipient. \nJohn holds a PhD in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada\, an MA in History from ANU and a BA (Hons 1) from UNSW. He is a graduate of the Royal Thai Army Command & Staff College (dux\, foreign students) and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon (Blamey Scholar). He has extensive experience in the intelligence community including as the principal intelligence staff officer for the Australian brigade in East Timor in September 1999\, as an intelligence exchange officer in Washington DC\, as Director Joint Intelligence Operations (J2)\, at Headquarters Joint Operations Command (2006/7) and as a lead author of the three-volume history of ASIO. In addition he was Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand and Myanmar.  He teaches “Honeypots and Overcoats: Australian Intelligence in the World” and supervises a number of students undertaking higher degrees by research. \nHis publications and research interests concern intelligence and the security arms of government\, Australian military history and strategy\, defence studies\, military operations (including East Timor\, Korea\, Iraq and Afghanistan); international relations\, notably on South-east Asia (Thailand\, Myanmar\, Timor Leste\, Indonesia\, South China Sea)\, North America\, (Canada/United States) and Australia’s Flag. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sandy Verschoor is a first-generation Australian of Dutch\, French\, Portuguese and Ceylonese descent.  Sandy is married to Gregg Mitchell\, a graphic designer and artist\, and has two daughters\, and a son. \n  \nSandy was elected as an Area Councillor in the 2015 by-election and served as Deputy Lord Mayor from June 2017 to November 2018.  She has had a career in the public and private enterprise\, not-for-profit organisations and Local and State Government\, including three years as General Manager City Culture and Community Services for the City of Adelaide. \n  \nSandy has contributed to the success of Adelaide’s thriving arts and culture community for more than two decades\, including having been CEO of the Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Festival\, as well as producer of the Adelaide Festival of Ideas in 2018. She has been on numerous boards as well as a trustee of the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust and Chairs a disability housing solutions organisation Aliro Ltd. \n  \nAs Lord Mayor\, Sandy is keen to keep costs low for residents and businesses by reducing red tape\, strengthening Adelaide’s global reputation for culture\, climate change action\, and entrepreneurialism\, preserving Adelaide’s heritage\, and enhancing the city’s precincts and main streets for the benefit of local small business owners and the community.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Owen is Director of the Wilderness Society in South Australia and has held that position for the last 5 years. Peter has been a member of the Society for 14 years and was their South Australian Campaign Manager from 2005 to 2014. Peter holds an Arts degree\, a Law degree\, and Graduate Diplomas in both Legal Practice and Environmental Studies. \nOver the past decade\, Peter and the team at TWSSA have been instrumental in the protection of vast areas of land and seascape including the Nullarbor Plain\, South Australia’s Offshore Islands\, the Arkaroola Mountains\, the Mawson Plateau\, the declaration of the State’s 19 Marine Parks and the campaign to protect the Great Australian Bight from risky deep sea oil drilling and the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. \nPeter is a past recipient of the South Australian of the Year for environmental protection and in 2016 was awarded the Australian Environmentalist of the Year from The Bob Brown Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Jim Whallley was appointed the Chief Entrepreneur for South Australia by the Premier in 2018. His task is to advocate for\neconomic growth and provide independent advice to the Government on innovation and entrepreneurship policy as Chair of\nthe Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. \nPrior to this appointment\, Jim was co-founder and Chairman of the Nova Group. In the last decade this company has grown\nrapidly and is now one of Australia’s largest privately owned Defence Professional Service Providers. The Group has been\none of the top 20 fastest growing companies in South Australia for four consecutive years\, has won a number of business\nawards and is recognised as one of the most innovative companies in Australia. \nJim is a former Air Force fighter pilot and test pilot\, with over 6\,000 flying hours on more than 40 types of aircraft ranging from\nhelicopters and jet transport aircraft to high performance fighters. He is a graduate of the Royal Air Force Empire Test Pilots’\nSchool and holds an MBA from the University of Adelaide and a Science degree from the UNSW. \nJim is active in a wide range of business forums. He is a Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts\, a member of the Sir Ross\nand Keith Smith Fund Advisory Committee\, and the Council of the University of SA. Jim retains a strong personal interest in\naviation as a civilian pilot and flies\, flight tests and displays a range of antique\, war bird and experimental aircraft and\nhelicopters. SUMMARY:Richard Heathcote - 'The Heritage of Carrick Hill'
DESCRIPTION:Richard Heathcote was born in the UK and has lived in Australia for 39 years.  Richard is currently Director of Benefaction at Carrick Hill historic house and garden in Adelaide.  He previously worked in Victoria\, where for a decade he managed Rippon Lea Estate\, the National Trust’s flagship property in Melbourne. \nRichard has broadcast and published on art\, heritage buildings and gardens.  He has an extensive knowledge of the collections\, architecture and social history of the English Country House.  Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2008\, Richard was able to visit locations in Canada and Britain\, looking at the interpretation of heritage sites.  In 2011 Richard also attended the Royal Collections Studies Course that is granted permission to inspect the Queen’s collection at Windsor Castle and other Royal palaces. \nThe fine collection of British and Australian paintings at Carrick Hill has provided rich material for Richard to create exhibitions\, associated publications and documentary films\, using his particular talent for making art accessible to everyone.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Hanlon was appointed a Board Member of Crime Stoppers South Australia in 2011.  Today\, she is Chair of Crime Stoppers SA\, Deputy Chair of Crime Stoppers Australia\, and a Director of Crime Stoppers International\, which is headquartered in The Netherlands. \nIn Australia\, a Crime Stoppers program operates in every State and Territory and they are considered a vital and intrinsic component of the national law enforcement landscape.  Each program is licensed by Crime Stoppers Australia\, which coordinates national appeals and programs designed to seek public support in reporting crime and criminal activities – especially for cross-border crimes such as illicit drug manufacture\, importation and distribution. In turn\, Crime Stoppers Australia is a member of the 1\,200 programs that operate in more than 20 countries and make up the Crime Stoppers International network. This global effort plays a critical role in encouraging the reporting of transnational crimes\, such as people and drug trafficking\, cybercrime and international fugitives.

SUMMARY:Tim Fischer AC - 'Tango in Trains and Travel'
DESCRIPTION:Tim Fischer was born at Lockhart on May 3rd1946.  He was educated at Xavier College in Melbourne and conscripted into the Australian Army from 1966 – 1969\, serving with the 1 RAR in both Australia and the Vietnam War\, before returning to the family farm at Boree Creek in southern NSW. \nTim was elected to the NSW State Parliament in 1971\, where he served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and became National Party Whip. He resigned from State politics in 1984 and\, in the same year\, was elected to the Federal Parliament as the Member for Farrer.  During his time in the Federal Parliament\, Tim held a number of senior trade and resource based portfolios; he was elected Leader of the National Party and served as Minister for Trade and Deputy Prime Minister in the Howard Government from 1996 – 1999. \nTim retired from politics in 2001\, served as Chair\, Tourism Australia from 2004 – 2007 and Australian Ambassador to the Holy See in Rome from 2009 – 2012.  Tim is currently the Chairman of the Global Crop Diversity Trust\, which has a seed vault in Svalbard\, Northern Norway.  Tim is now a successful book author; his other interests include family\, farming\, charity work\, biking and bushwalking in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. Tim lives at Mudgegonga with his wife Judy and their two sons.

In 2012\, Ms Forster was promoted to Group Captain and appointed as Director\, Pathway to Change. Margot then took up the position of Chief of Staff Air Force Personnel Branch and in 2015 she was promoted again and appointed to the position of Commandant\, Australian Command and Staff College. \n  \nMs Forster has received a number of awards and commendations during her career\, including a Conspicuous Service Medal in 2009. In 2016 Ms Forster retired from the Air Force to take up her present position as Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Teaming Centre.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Emeritus Rosemary Ryall retired in 2010 from her position as Chief Medical Scientist and Professor of Urological Research in the Department of Surgery at the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University\, South Australia. \n  \nRose’s initial involvement in the urodynamics service of the Urology Unit developed into a role oriented more to basic urological research\, with her primary interests focused on biochemical factors\, especially proteins\, affecting the formation of human kidney stones. She has delivered 50 invited international lectures and published more than 190 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. In recognition of her published work in the field of urolithiasis research she was awarded a Doctorate of Science from the Australian National University in 1998 and a Lifetime Achievement Award by her international stone colleagues in 2012. \n  \nIn addition to her scientific interests\, for many years Rose has been intensely concerned with the ethics of human experimentation\, especially that involving the use of human tissues or products\, and has often been asked to speak on the ethics of medical research. She was a member of the Flinders Medical Centre Clinical Research Ethics Committee from 1990 until her retirement in 2010\, and in 1997 was a founding member of the Human Research Ethics Committee of Calvary Hospital\, to which she still contributes.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Jeffery Howard Nicholas considers himself to be a quintessential South Australian. Born in Mt Gambier at the beginning of World War II\, his early education could only be described as truncated\, as the family moved from one government appointment to another. Moving gave him a wide appreciation of country life before he finally settled in Adelaide to further his education. \nMatriculating from Adelaide Boys High School\, Dr Nicholas attended Adelaide Teachers College and The University of Adelaide\, with appointments to follow at Mt Barker High School and Gilles Plains High School before he taught Health and Physical Education at Salisbury Teachers College. After eventually completing a Doctor of Education at Boston University in 1981\, Dr Nicholas transferred to Sturt College of Advanced Education which became part of Flinders University\, from where he ultimately retired in 1995 as Head of Health and Physical Education. \nHis passion for South Australian history grew in retirement. Dr Nicholas has a passion for South Australian history\, which grew during his tenure as President of the Pioneers Association of South Australia. \nHis debut three-volume book Behind the Streets of Adelaide — Born of Reform: A pantheon of dissent is to be published by Torrens Press and launched on 23 May 2016.

A third area of interest relates to nutrition in the elderly and Natalie has developed a project with Meals on Wheels Inc. South Australia. \n  \nNatalie has presented at numerous local\, national and international meetings; authored 55 peer-reviewed papers/reviews; written 2 book chapters and has been a major contributor to the CSIRO Low-Carb Diet book.

DESCRIPTION:His Excellency was born in South Vietnam in 1954. He attended Dalat University\, but fled Vietnam from the new communist regime in 1977\, and came to Darwin in an open boat. \nThe Governor attended the University of Adelaide\, receiving an economics and accounting degree and an MBA. He was a señor investigator and manager with ASIC from the early 1990’s until his retirement in 2009. \nHis Excellency was awarded an Australian Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001 for service to the advancement of multiculturalism and a Companion of the Order of Australian in 2016. \nHis Excellency was appointed Lieutenant Governor of South Australia in 2007\, and on September 1st 2014 he was sworn in as Governor of South Australia.

DESCRIPTION:Carolyn has worked at the State Library for 37 years and loves its mix of heritage collections and the latest technology. She currently delivers community-learning programs\, assists researchers\, and coordinates the Library’s transcription program. \nCarolyn explores the life of the little-known South Australian Sir Hubert Wilkins—polar explorer but so much more—in a slideshow of sumptuous images from the collections of the State Library\, from rare books to a ticket to hear Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at the Adelaide Town Hall in 1920. Readings from Sir Hubert’s writings reveal an endearing man of science and spiritualism.
