DESCRIPTION:Lainie Anderson has been a columnist with Adelaide’s Sunday Mail for 14 years. Her 30-year career in journalism and public relations includes stints at the Herald Sun in Melbourne\, The Times in London and the South Australian Tourism Commission.  \n  \nIn 2016 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to gauge the significance of Adelaide’s historic Vickers Vimy aircraft and retrace the route of the 1919 Air Race from England to Australia. She has since written a novel on the race\, Long Flight Home\, and co-produced The Greatest Air Race documentary which aired on SBS TV. Both are available for sale after her presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Rod Barton is a former Director of Strategic Technology in Australia’s Defence Intelligence Organisation.   His intelligence career spanned over 20 years\, with postings to London\, Bahrain\, Baghdad\, New York and Mogadishu.  During this time\, Rod also worked with the United Nations in Somalia as the Director of Disarmament and Demobilisation of Somali militias; and in Iraq as a Principal UN Weapons Inspector.  After the 2003 Iraq War\, he became a special advisor to the CIA in the futile hunt for the so-called\, missing ‘weapons of mass destruction.’ \nRod is the author of “The Weapons Detective – The Inside Story of Australia’s top Weapons Detective.” (Black Inc. 2006) and “The Life of a Spy” (Black Inc. 2021).

DESCRIPTION:Justice Doyle graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from Adelaide University and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University. \n   \nJustice Doyle was an associate to the Honourable Justice Lander from 1995-1996\, before joining the legal firm of Fisher Jeffries\, working as a solicitor from 1997-2001.  Justice Doyle was a member of Jeffcott Chambers between 2002-2015 and took silk in 2012.  He was Vice President of the SA Bar Association from 2014-2015. \n  \nJustice Doyle was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia in December 2015.  He has spent the last five years hearing matters in both the civil and criminal jurisdictions of the Court\, regularly sitting as member of the Full Court of the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal. \n  \nIn December 2020 Justice Doyle was appointed a Justice of the Court of Appeal. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:His Excellency the Honorable Hieu Van Le AC is South Australia’s 35th Governor and the first person of Asian origin to be appointed a State Governor in Australia.  He assumed office in September 2014 and will complete his term in office at the end of August 2021.  Previously\, His Excellency had been Lieutenant Governor of South Australia from 2007 to 2014.  Following his arrival as a Vietnamese refugee in 1977\, His Excellency has had a long interest and involvement in multicultural communities.  He served as Chair of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission from 2006 –2009 and was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001 ‘for services to the advancement of multiculturism in Australia’.  \nThe Honourable Chris Kourakis SC is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia.  He grew up in Port Lincoln as one of ten children of Greek migrants.  Chris practised at the Bar from 1989\, was appointed a QC in 1997 and appointed the Solicitor-General of South Australia from 2003 to 2008.  In 2008 Chris was appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia and in 2012\, Justice Kourakis was elevated to Chief Justice.   \nThe Chief Justice will deliver a tribute speech on the Governor’s retirement.

DESCRIPTION:Nicola graduated from the University of Bari\, Italy in 1987 with a degree in Electronic Engineering.  He then worked in microelectronic research\, before being appointed as Scientific Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Canberra from 2001 to 2008.  In 2009\, Nicola joined the South Australian Government as a Special Envoy for Higher Education\, Research and Technology Transfer\, later becoming Director for International R&D Collaborations.  From 2003 to 2013 Nicola was Adjunct Professor of Science and Technology at the Australian National University in Canberra\, and in 2007 he became an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia.  In 2017 the South Australian Space Industry Centre was created with Nicola as Director.  In 2018\, Nicola was appointed Adjunct Professor at the University of South Australia in the Division of Information Technology\, Engineering and the Environment. In the same year Nicola was appointed to the Board of the Space Industry Association of Australia and awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for promoting high technology and R&D collaboration between Italy and Australia.  In 2019\, Nicola became the Senior Advisor of the South Australian Space Industry Centre\, and in 2020 he founded the Andy Thomas Space Foundation\, of which he is now the CEO.

DESCRIPTION:Dr David Headon is a cultural consultant and historian.  Formerly Director of the Centre for Australian \nCultural Studies (1994-2004)\, Cultural Adviser to the National Capital Authority (2000-2007)\, History and Heritage Adviser for the Centenary of Canberra (2008-13) and an Adviser to Senator Kate Lundy (2008-15)\, he is now a Foundation Fellow in the Australian Studies Institute (Research School of Humanities and the Arts\, ANU)\, a Parliamentary Library Associate\, an Associate of the National Museum of Australia and the Canberra Raiders RL Club historian. \n  \nDr Headon is a regular commentator on cultural\, political and social issues on ABC radio (regional and national).  From 2008 to 2015\, he presented a series of segments for ABC TV’s 7.30 Report on Canberra’s rich vein of Centenary/Federation history.  In 2001\, David was awarded the Centenary Medal and in 2018 he began a series of annual lectures at the Australian High Commission\, London\, on Australia’s ‘First Eight’ Prime Ministers.

DESCRIPTION:David Mark grew up in Adelaide and attended the South Australian College of Advanced Education.  David holds a Bachelor of Education\, Physical Education Teaching and Coaching degree and a MBA in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management. \n  \nComing from a football family\, it was natural for David to gravitate to SANFL football administration and he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Norwood Football Club for 8 years.  David then moved to Canberra\, where he held the position of General Manager of AFL Canberra for 2 years. \n  \nLeaving sport\, David then moved into the not-for-profit world\, initially joining Novita as the Director of Commercial Services.  David was then CEO at St Vincent De Pauls and just over a year ago he joined Operation Flinders\, where he currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. James Muecke AM graduated with Honours from Adelaide Medical School in 1987.  James lived and worked as a doctor in Africa and subsequently as an eye surgeon in the Middle East\, battling malaria\, wild animals and rebel soldiers.  He founded ‘Sight for All’ in 2008\,’ which is dedicated to fighting blindness in the Aboriginal and mainstream communities of Australia and some of the poorer countries in Asia and Africa.  \n Dr. Muecke’s commitment to social impact and humanitarian endeavours has earned him many awards\, including an Order of Australia in 2012\, the Australian Medical Association’s President’s Leadership Award in 2013 and the Ernst & Young’s Social Entrepreneur for Australia in 2015 and most recently Australian of the Year 2020.  \nJames is a researcher\, an author\, a musician\, a photographer and a film producer.  He uses his many skills to deliver passionate\, fascinating and sometimes confronting presentations.  A neurological condition impacting on his dexterity has forced Dr. Muecke into premature retirement from surgery.  James has redirected his vigour to crafting films and has already produced a number of documentaries and several compelling projects in production

DESCRIPTION:Monica Oliphant is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of South Australia\, a University Fellow at Charles Darwin University and also runs her own Consultancy.  She worked 18 years for the electricity utility ETSA as a research scientist in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency and was involved in the SA Government’s wind resource assessment program in the late 1980’s. \n  \nAdjunct Associate Professor Oliphant is a member of the International Solar Energy Society and was President from 2008 – 2009.  Monica has travelled extensively overseas\, speaking at Conferences and meetings. \nAdjunct Associate Professor Oliphant has participated on many Australian Federal and State Government Committees and was a Board member of both the Premier’s Round Table in sustainability and then Renewables SA.  She received an AO in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of her work in Renewable Energy and was named 2016 Senior South Australian of the Year.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Nikoloff is an Executive Director and Co-founder of Nova Systems and Senior Weapons System Engineer.  He obtained an Aeronautical Engineer degree from RMIT in 1986 and has 30 years experience supporting Defence and Space projects.  Peter’s Woomera Test Range experience includes supporting the recent upgrade and operations for both military weapon systems and launch operations. \n  \nSpace is one of Nova’s fastest growing areas\, supporting Defence’s Military Satcom\, Geospatial Information Systems and Satellite Ground Stations.  Peter is a strong advocate for growing a strong space industry in Australia and is a member of the South Australian Space Centre Advisory Council and the Industry Director of the SmartSat Co-operative Research Centre. \n  \nPeter was a member of the team responsible for bringing the International Astronautical Congress to Adelaide in 2017\, which was a significant catalyst for the establishment of the Space Agency.

DESCRIPTION:Ian Henschke is Chief Advocate for National Seniors Australia.  He took up this role in 2017 and in 2019 was appointed the Spokesperson for the Alliance for a Fairer Retirement System. \n  \nIan is a former South Australian television journalist and radio presenter.  He reported for the 7.30 Report in the 1980’s and 1990’s and also worked for the ABCTV program Countrywide.  Ian reported for 4 Corners in 1999\, making Emission Impossible\, a documentary about global warming that won the Jury Prize at the 2000 Grenoble International Film Festival.  Ian hosted the ABCTV program Stateline for 10 years\, and then worked on ABC Radio\, until he left the ABC in December 2016. \n  \nIan is a regular columnist for The Advertiser’s Saturday supplement\, SA Weekend.  He was awarded the 2001 Centenary of Federation Medal\, for his services to the Australian society through broadcasting.

DESCRIPTION:Mitchell Butel is an Australian actor\, singer\, writer and director.  He is best known for his work in the theatre\, including musical and opera productions.  Mitchell has worked extensively with many theatre companies\, both in Australia and overseas.  He has been awarded four Helpmann Awards\, two Green Room Awards and four Sydney Theatre Awards.   \nMitchell has appeared in a number of television and film productions and has twice been nominated for Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards.  He has also appeared in a number of productions for Opera Australia.  Mitchell produced a live musical album ‘Killing Time\,’ which was recorded during his performance at the 2010 Adelaide Cabaret Festival and consists of songs and poetry.  In addition\, Mitchell has a number of credits for his writing and directing for the theatre. \nIn March 2019\, Mitchell was appointed the Artistic Director of the State Theatre Company of South Australia.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Monteath is a Professor of History at Flinders University in Adelaide.  He was born and grew up in Brisbane before attending the University of Queensland\, Siegen University (Federal Republic of Germany) and Griffith University. \nProfessor Monteath has taught previously at The Universities of Queensland\, Western Australia and Adelaide as well as at Griffith and Deakin Universities.  Peter has also been Adjunct Professor at The University of St. Louis Missouri and the Technical University of Berlin\, where he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. \nCurrently Peter teaches modern European history and writes about various aspects of European and Australian history\, with a particular interest in things German.  Away from Flinders\, he is President of the History Council of South Australia\, a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and a Trustee of the History Trust of South Australia. \nPeter’s Interests include a distant admiration for Hertha BSC (a top-tier German Football Club)\, badminton\, and unabashed nostalgia for the glorydays of the Brisbane Lions.

DESCRIPTION:John Blaxland is Professor of International Security and Intelligence Studies\, Director of the ANU Southeast Asia Institute and Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU\, overseeing its three degree programs. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales. In addition\, he is a member of the ANU Academic Board as well as the Australian Army Journal editorial board and an occasional commentator in the media. He is a US Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative grant recipient. \nJohn holds a PhD in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada\, an MA in History from ANU and a BA (Hons 1) from UNSW. He is a graduate of the Royal Thai Army Command & Staff College (dux\, foreign students) and the Royal Military College\, Duntroon (Blamey Scholar). He has extensive experience in the intelligence community including as the principal intelligence staff officer for the Australian brigade in East Timor in September 1999\, as an intelligence exchange officer in Washington DC\, as Director Joint Intelligence Operations (J2)\, at Headquarters Joint Operations Command (2006/7) and as a lead author of the three-volume history of ASIO. In addition he was Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand and Myanmar.  He teaches “Honeypots and Overcoats: Australian Intelligence in the World” and supervises a number of students undertaking higher degrees by research. \nHis publications and research interests concern intelligence and the security arms of government\, Australian military history and strategy\, defence studies\, military operations (including East Timor\, Korea\, Iraq and Afghanistan); international relations\, notably on South-east Asia (Thailand\, Myanmar\, Timor Leste\, Indonesia\, South China Sea)\, North America\, (Canada/United States) and Australia’s Flag. \n

Peter holds an Arts degree\, a Law degree\, and Graduate Diplomas in both Legal Practice and Environmental Studies. \nOver the past decade\, Peter and the team at TWSSA have been instrumental in the protection of vast areas of land and seascape including the Nullarbor Plain\, South Australia’s Offshore Islands\, the Arkaroola Mountains\, the Mawson Plateau\, the declaration of the State’s 19 Marine Parks and the campaign to protect the Great Australian Bight from risky deep sea oil drilling and the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. \nPeter is a past recipient of the South Australian of the Year for environmental protection and in 2016 was awarded the Australian Environmentalist of the Year from The Bob Brown Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Jim Whallley was appointed the Chief Entrepreneur for South Australia by the Premier in 2018. His task is to advocate for\neconomic growth and provide independent advice to the Government on innovation and entrepreneurship policy as Chair of\nthe Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. \nPrior to this appointment\, Jim was co-founder and Chairman of the Nova Group. In the last decade this company has grown\nrapidly and is now one of Australia’s largest privately owned Defence Professional Service Providers. The Group has been\none of the top 20 fastest growing companies in South Australia for four consecutive years\, has won a number of business\nawards and is recognised as one of the most innovative companies in Australia. \nJim is a former Air Force fighter pilot and test pilot\, with over 6\,000 flying hours on more than 40 types of aircraft ranging from\nhelicopters and jet transport aircraft to high performance fighters. He is a graduate of the Royal Air Force Empire Test Pilots’\nSchool and holds an MBA from the University of Adelaide and a Science degree from the UNSW. \nJim is active in a wide range of business forums. He is a Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts\, a member of the Sir Ross\nand Keith Smith Fund Advisory Committee\, and the Council of the University of SA. Jim retains a strong personal interest in\naviation as a civilian pilot and flies\, flight tests and displays a range of antique\, war bird and experimental aircraft and\nhelicopters. Jim is married to Melinda and they have six children.

SUMMARY:Richard Heathcote - 'The Heritage of Carrick Hill'
DESCRIPTION:Richard Heathcote was born in the UK and has lived in Australia for 39 years.  Richard is currently Director of Benefaction at Carrick Hill historic house and garden in Adelaide.  He previously worked in Victoria\, where for a decade he managed Rippon Lea Estate\, the National Trust’s flagship property in Melbourne. \nRichard has broadcast and published on art\, heritage buildings and gardens.  He has an extensive knowledge of the collections\, architecture and social history of the English Country House.  Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2008\, Richard was able to visit locations in Canada and Britain\, looking at the interpretation of heritage sites.  In 2011 Richard also attended the Royal Collections Studies Course that is granted permission to inspect the Queen’s collection at Windsor Castle and other Royal palaces. \nThe fine collection of British and Australian paintings at Carrick Hill has provided rich material for Richard to create exhibitions\, associated publications and documentary films\, using his particular talent for making art accessible to everyone.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Hanlon was appointed a Board Member of Crime Stoppers South Australia in 2011.  Today\, she is Chair of Crime Stoppers SA\, Deputy Chair of Crime Stoppers Australia\, and a Director of Crime Stoppers International\, which is headquartered in The Netherlands. \nIn Australia\, a Crime Stoppers program operates in every State and Territory and they are considered a vital and intrinsic component of the national law enforcement landscape.  Each program is licensed by Crime Stoppers Australia\, which coordinates national appeals and programs designed to seek public support in reporting crime and criminal activities – especially for cross-border crimes such as illicit drug manufacture\, importation and distribution. In turn\, Crime Stoppers Australia is a member of the 1\,200 programs that operate in more than 20 countries and make up the Crime Stoppers International network. This global effort plays a critical role in encouraging the reporting of transnational crimes\, such as people and drug trafficking\, cybercrime and international fugitives.
