DESCRIPTION:Julian Burnside AO QC \nJulian Burnside is a barrister based in Melbourne.  He specialises in commercial litigation.  He joined the Bar in 1976 and took silk in 1989. \nHe acted for the Ok Tedi natives against BHP\, for Alan Bond in fraud trials\, for Rose Porteous in numerous actions against Gina Rinehart\, and for the Maritime Union of Australia in the 1998 waterfront dispute against Patrick Stevedores. He was Senior Counsel assisting the Australian Broadcasting Authority in the “Cash for Comment” inquiry and was senior counsel for Liberty Victoria in the Tampa litigation. \nHe is a former President of Liberty Victoria\, and has acted pro bono in many human rights cases\, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees. \nHe is passionately involved in the arts.  He collects contemporary paintings and sculptures and regularly commissions music.  He is Chair of Fortyfive Downstairs\, a not for profit arts and performance venue in Flinders Lane\, Melbourne\, and Chair of Chamber Music Australia. \nHe is the author of a book of essays on language and etymology\, Wordwatching (Scribe\, 2004) and Watching Brief\, (Scribe\, 2007) a collection of his essays and speeches about the justice system and human rights.  He compiled a book of letters written by asylum seekers held in Australia’s detention camps.  The book\, From Nothing to Zero was published in 2003 by Lonely Planet.  He also wrote Matilda and the Dragon a children’s book published by Allen & Unwin in 1991. \nIn 2004 he was elected as a Living National Treasure.  In 2009 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia. \nIn 2014 he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize. \nHe is married to artist Kate Durham.

SUMMARY:What does ICAC do?  – Hon. Bruce Lander QC\, Independent Commissioner Against Corruption\, South Australia
DESCRIPTION:On 19 February 2013\, it was announced that the Honourable Justice Lander would be South Australia’s first Independent Commissioner Against Corruption. \nThe Hon. Bruce Lander QC\, as he now is\, was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of South Australia in March 1969. \nHe practised as a solicitor until 1981 when he signed the Bar Roll. In 1986 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. \nIn November 1994 he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia. He remained a Judge of that Court until he was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia on 14 July 2003. \nIn January 2004 he was appointed an additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. In December 2008 he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island. \nIn November 2005 he was appointed a Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for a term of five years and was reappointed in 2010 for a further term. \nIn April 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law by Flinders University for his contribution to the law and the university. \nBruce Lander resigned all his judicial appointments to take up his current appointment on 2 September 2013. \nHis tenure as Commissioner is for a period of seven years.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Paul Kerin is Head of the School of Economics at the University of Adelaide. He also writes a monthly column on governance issues for Company Director Magazine (  published by the Australian Institute of Company Directors) and is a member of the Social-Economic Modelling Committee of the Royal Commission into the Nuclear Fuel Cycle(South Australia). Paul’s career has spanned the academic\, business\, media\, public policy\, regulatory and not-for profit sectors. Past roles include: Professorial Fellow in Strategy at Melbourne Business School\, Managing Director of A.T. Kearney in Australia and New Zealand\, columnist with the Australian and BRW\,CEO of the Essential Services Commission of South Australia\, Chairman of Prahran Market and various non-executive directorships. He has written extensively on the need for tax reform in Australia\, including several articles in the Australian over the past year.

SUMMARY:Vincent Ciccarello - “Is the ASO relevant in 2016?”
DESCRIPTION:OUR SPEAKER Vincent Ciccarello has been actively involved in classical music for almost 30 years. \nHe studied piano and musicology at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide and became active in arts admin as manager of Elder Hall\, the Adelaide Chamber Singers and Elder Conservatorium Youth Orchestra\, before taking up the role of Orchestra Resources Manager of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (1990-1994). He left the QSO in 1994 and was appointed Head of Opera and Classical Music at the Melbourne-based theatrical agency\, Performers Management. He became a trustee of the Brian Stacey Memorial Trust in 1996. Vincent subsequently owned and operated Fanfare Artist Management\, representing classical music and music theatre artists across Australia and New Zealand (1994-2004). Between 2004-2006\,Vincent worked as a journalist at the new Independent Weekly newspaper in Adelaide\, with a special interest in arts\, culture and lifestyle. From 2006\,he worked as a journalist at the University of South Australia and Flinders University with editorial responsibilities for various university print and online news publications. Vincent was Chairman of the Australasian classical Music Managers’ Association from 2010 to 2014\, when he resigned to accept the position of CEO of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Over the course of his career\, Vincent has written program or CD liner notes for Opera Australia\, all the State Symphony Orchestras\, ABC Classics and Universal Music. In addition to contributing to Soundscapes magazine \,he has also given pre-concert talks for the Queensland\, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras and the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Adelaide.

DESCRIPTION:David Sefton is set to become the first Artistic Director to deliver four consecutive Adelaide Festivals after being offered the opportunity to curate the 2016 festival. \nAdelaide Festival Chair\, Richard Ryan AO\, said: “Since David moved to Adelaide in 2011 the board has been impressed with his shrewd mixture of bold programming and his determination to deliver a unique festival that stands as the premier Arts event in Australia”. \nDavid began his career as a publisher\, music journalist and promoter\, based in his hometown of Liverpool. In 1993 he founded the annual Meltdown Festival at London’s Royal Festival Hall\, now credited with re-writing the rules by putting musicians in charge of programming. \nThe last decade he spent heading the nine-month long Arts Festival\, UCLA Live\, in Los Angeles\, an annual international theatre festival alongside a program of music\, dance and spoken word. David is also the recipient of awards including the Chevalier des Artes et Lettres\, presented by the French President in May 2010\, Time Out’s award for outstanding contribution to the Arts (twice) and the LA Weekly Outstanding Contribution to Theatre Award. \nDavid will highlight some of the outstanding performances coming to the 2016 Adelaide Festival\, 26th February to 14th March.

SUMMARY:The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry at the Burnside Civic Centre SUNDOWNER
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry is currently touring the world and will be on display. There will also be a talk about it given by its travelling curator. \nA project to involve communities around the world in celebration of Scottish heritage and culture\, the people and places which connect Scotland to its global diaspora. \nScots have migrated all over the world and have often had a profound impact on the areas where they settled. This project brought together stories from more than such communities\, documenting their Scottish connections in more than 300 embroidered panels. It is a remarkable and heart-felt homage to the determination\, courage and achievement of Scottish migrants and their descendants across the centuries. \nSince its completion in 2010 it has attracted thousands of visitors as it tours the country and the world. Its enormous success is due to the passion of the volunteers who created it\, the astonishing quality of the artwork and embroidery\, and fascinating history it depicts.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Leanna Read is South Australia’s fourth Chief Scientist and the first woman to hold the position. A renowned biotechnologist\, she brings a wealth of executive\, board and investment experience in technology-based businesses. \nIn addition to her Chief Scientist role\, Leanna chairs the Cooperative Research Centre for Cell Therapy Manufacturing and is a member of the SA Economic Development Board\, as well as the Council of the University of South Australia.  She is also a member of BioAngels which supports early-stage life sciences businesses\, and a Board Director of Biosensis Pty Ltd. \nA biochemist by training\, Leanna has led a number of successful research and commercial ventures\, including the Cooperative Research Centre for Tissue Growth and Repair\, a successful commercially focused CRC. She was also the founding Managing Director and CEO of Adelaide biotechnology company\, TGR BioSciences Pty Ltd from 2001 – 2012. \nLeanna is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering\, and of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.  She has also received a number of awards\, including the 2006 South Australian of the Year (Science and Technology) and the 2011 Central Region winner of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Technology Category. Dr Read has published over 90 scientific papers and has received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia. \nAs Chief Scientist\, Leanna provides independent advice on science strategy and policy to the State Government\, as well as to the research and industry sectors.  In particular\, she plans to foster science excellence\, help link the State’s researchers with industry\, and improve the quality and uptake of STEM education. \nGiven that 70% of our research is done in the public sector\, Leanna puts high priority on developing a more entrepreneurial culture in researchers\, as well as transforming the State’s economy to more high value-add enterprises.

DESCRIPTION:Stephanie McCarthy is a South Australian author who has been writing books\, screenplay\, television\, and plays for stage and radio for 35 years\, winning major awards especially for her radio dramas produced by the BBC and the ABC. She has been a book reviewer and is a teacher of both adults and children\, conducting workshops and inspirational speeches on the subject of creative writing\, and more recently on the subject of TOM PRICE – from Stonecutter to Premier. A script editor for the Australian Writers’ Guild\, Stephanie has been employed as script assessor for the South Australian Film Corporation and the Australia Council. Her published works include teenage novels Diary Z and Red\, the biography of a country GP Bloody Marvellous!\, an adult novel Erogeny\, and the gift book series Mad Cars Disease which sells Australia wide. \nThe biography of Tom Price led Stephanie down an eight year path of solid research beginning in North East Wales and Liverpool\, culminating in South Australia. Unexpected ‘treasures’ surfaced throughout the journey. Historians from Adelaide\, Wales and even Cornwall have pitched in to share their knowledge and to check Stephanie from indulging in any flights of fictional fancy. Notwithstanding\, she remained determined to ensure that Tom the man springs fresh and relevant from the page as if he were living amongst us today.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Cosgrove was born in Sydney in 1947.  The son of a soldier\, he attended Waverley College in Sydney and graduated in 1968 from the Royal Military College\, Duntroon. \nEarly in his military career\, he fought in Vietnam\, commanding a rifle platoon.  He was awarded the Military Cross in 1971 for his performance and leadership during an assault on enemy positions. \nIn 1972\, he served as Aide de Camp to Governor-General Sir Paul Hasluck.  He returned to regimental life as second in command of a Company\, rising to Adjutant then Company Commander in the Army’s 5th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment  (5 RAR)\, then 5/7 RAR in Holsworthy\, Sydney.  Subsequent appointments included a period as a tactics instructor at the Army’s Infantry Centre in Singleton\, New South Wales; a year’s study at the United States Marine Corps Staff College in Quantico\, USA; extended periods of duty in the United Kingdom and India; and command of 1 RAR.  He was appointed a Member in the Military Division of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service in command in 1983-84. \nPeter Cosgrove came to national attention in 1999 when\, as Commander of the International Task Force East Timor (INTERFET)\, he was responsible for overseeing that country’s transition to independence.  For his leadership in this role he was promoted to Companion in the Military Division of the Order of Australia (AC). \nPromoted to Lieutenant General\, he was appointed Chief of Army in 2000.  After further promotion to General\, he served as Chief of the Defence Force from 2002-2005.  He retired from the Australian Defence Force in 2005. \nSubsequently\, he accepted positions on several boards\, including QANTAS\, Cardno and the Australian Rugby Union.  He was appointed by the Queensland Government to lead the taskforce rebuilding communities in the Innisfail region following the devastation caused by Cyclone Larry in 2006.  From 2007 to 2012\, he chaired the Council of the Australian War Memorial\, and served as Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University from 2010 until early 2014. \nOn 25 March 2014\, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced that General Cosgrove would become a Knight in the Order of Australia when sworn in as Governor-General. \nGeneral Sir Peter Cosgrove gave the Boyer Lectures series\, “A Very Australian Conversation” in 2009.  His autobiography “My Story” was published in 2006.  He was named Australian of the Year in 2001. \nAn avid sports follower\, General Sir Peter Cosgrove takes particular interest in rugby and cricket. \nHe and his wife Lady Cosgrove\, who will accompany her husband\, have three adult sons and one grandson

DESCRIPTION:Geoff grew up on a fruit block in Vale Park. \nLicensed Surveyor and spent eight years\, from 1969 to 1978\, in geodetic and cadastral surveying with the Department of Lands in South Australia. \nIn 1978 undertook thirteen years in the coal mining and construction industry in the far north of South Australia. \nIn 1991 returned to the government to work as the Regional Surveyor at the Berri  office of the Department of Lands. Three years later took on the job of Supervising Geodetic Surveyor with the same department in Adelaide. \nFrom 2001 until 2009 the author was also lecturer in Geodesy and supervisor of Honours Theses at the University of South Australia. \nThe author holds adegree in Surveying from the University of Adelaide\, Master of Science in Surveying and Geodesy from the University of Oxford\, \nand is proceeding to a degree in Australian and English literature at the University of Adelaide. \nPublications include those in Geodetic datum issues\, accuracy of Digital elevation Models\, Precise earth movement studies\, transference of heights above sea level by flat river levels and re-interpretation of Murray River Flood levels\, and effects of soil movement in Hillcrest area on boundary system. Research topics include the creation of a geometrically determined geoid-spheroid template over metropolitan Adelaide.

DESCRIPTION:Rear Admiral the Honourable Kevin Scarce AC CSC RAN (Rtd)\,born in Adelaide and educated at Elizabeth East Primary School and Elizabeth High School\, was the 34th Governor of South Australia from 2007 to 2014. \nHe served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1968\, on HMAS Sydney during the Vietnam War and as the commander of HMAS Cerberus between 1995 and 1997. \nHe also specialised in military logistics and procurement\, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral and Head of Maritime Systems at the Defence Material Organisation. As head of the South Australian Defence Unit\, he lead a government team that contributed to ASC winning the contract to build air warfare destroyers for the Australian Defence Force. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in 1994\, the Knight of Grace in the Venerable Order of Saint John in 2007 and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2008. \nRear Admiral Scarce completed a Bachelor of Financial Administration from New England\, Masters of Management Economics at the University of New South Wales (Australian Defence Force Academy campus)\, and a Masters degree in National Security Strategy at the US War College (National Defense University) in Washington\, DC. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Flinders University in 2009 for distinguished service to the public of South Australia and an Honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris causa) from the University of New England in 2014. In addition to his role as 16th Chancellor of the University of Adelaide\, Rear Admiral Scarce was recently appointed Chair of Cancer Council SA and President of Novita Children’s Services. More recently Premier Weatherill announced Kevin Scarce to head a Royal Commission into Nuclear Energy.

Martin went on to study an MBA and became the General Manager of the Rundle Mall Management Authority between 2010 and 2013. Martin co-founded the Entrepreneur’s Organisation in South Australia and has served on a number of Boards including the South Australian Youth Arts council (SAYAB)\, Property Council of Australia’s Mainstreets Committee and the Bay to Birdwood Run Inc. \nMartin has also worked as a lecturer for MBA students where he has taught entrepreneurship\, new venture creation\, strategic marketing and other subjects in Adelaide and interstate. Ms Adamson served in the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong in the late 1980’s during the early years of China’s reform and opening\, and first visited mainland China in 1987. She was seconded as representative to the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei from 2001 to 2005. She has twice served in the Australian High Commission in London\, as Deputy High Commissioner from 2005-2008 and Political Counsellor from 1993 to 1997. She was Chief of Staff to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and then the Minister for Defence from 2009 to 2010. \nMs Adamson is an honorary patron of the China-Australia Chamber of Commerce in Beijing\, patron of the Australia-China Alumni Association\, a member of the Advisory Board of the Australian National University’s Australian Centre on China in the world and an ex-officio member of the Leadership Council of the Australia-China Youth Dialogue. \nShe is married with four children and speaks Mandarin.

DESCRIPTION:Born in 1950 and educated at Prince Alfred College\, Glenn is a fifth generation Cooper. \nGlenn started off his working career by gaining qualifications in electronic engineering and later in computing and marketing. After his completion of studies\, Glenn entered into the computing field with a company called Anderson Digital Equipment. After two years with this company\, Glenn moved to Melbourne to take up his new role of National Distribution Manager. In 1983 he returned to SA to set up a private business in computer sales and contract services. This company grew to a substantial size with offices in Adelaide and Brisbane. In July 1990\, Glenn joined the family brewery and today is Executive Chairman at Coopers Brewery and also held the responsibility of company marketing. He has overseen the launch of numerous products to the Coopers beer range including Coopers Mild Ale\, Coopers Dark Ale\, Coopers Exrta Strong Vintage Ale\, Coopers Lager and most recently Coopers Clear. He now oversees Coopers interstate operations\, which includes recent distribution and brewing rights for international beers\, Carlsberg\, Sapporo and Kronenbourg. Glenn is currently the Deputy Chairman of Australian Made Australian Grown\, since early 2010. \nHe has been Chairman Adelaide Fringe Committee and the Adelaide Convention and Tourism Authority. In 2002 he received a Centenary Medal and was awarded a Member General Division of the Order of Australia. Glenn’s focus is to continually expand the Coopers Company interstate and Internationally and retain Coopers as a privately held family company. Glenn is married to wife Elspeth and they have two children.

SUMMARY:Centenary of First World War - The Telling of Our Story
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Brendan Nelson commenced as Director of the Australian War Memorial on 17th December\, 2012.  Prior to this he was the Australian Ambassador to Belgium\, Luxembourg\, The European Union and NATO(2009-12). \nApart from overseeing a major transformation in Australia’s relationships with the European Union and NATO\, Dr. Nelson forged deep links with the communities of Flanders\, where almost 13\,000 Australians lost their lives during the First World War. He regularly made the trip from Brussells to the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial at Leper\, where the names of 6\,190 Australians who died in the First WW and have no known grave are listed. \nBorn at Coburg in Victoria in 1958\, Dr. Nelson studied at Flinders University in South Australia\, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. He worked as a medical practitioner in Hobart from 1985-1995. In 1993 he was elected unopposed\, as National President of the AMA\, becoming the youngest person ever to hold this position. He had previously served as National Vice President\, and Tasmanian Branch President\, of the AMA. \nDuring his time as National President\, he campaigned on a wide range of social policy issues\, including Aboriginal health and immunisation\, and led the campaign against tobacco advertising and sponsorship of sport.  He was also a relentless advocate for private health insurance. In 1995 Dr. Nelson retired as President of the AMA\, following his preselection as the Liberal candidate for the Sydney seat of Bradfield.  He was subsequently elected to the Federal Parliament of Australia. \nAfter the 2001 election\, he was promoted from parliamentary secretary to Cabinet in the senior portfolio of Minister for Education\, Science and Training. In 2006 he became Minister for Defence when troops were deployed to Iraq\, Afghanistan\, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. In November 2007 Dr. Nelson was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Australia\, serving as Leader of the Opposition until September 2008 when he retired from politics and took on his ambassadorial appointment. He has received many honours\, notably the AMA’s Gold Medal for “Distinguished Service to Medicine and Humanity.” In addition to being Director of the Australian War Memorial Dr. Nelson sits on many other boards and committees. \nHe is married with three adult children\, his interests include Australian Military History\, music\, motorcycles and tennis.

SUMMARY:The Digger's Doctor\, A Life of Service
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Donald Beard has had an extraordinary career. He has been quoted as a man of substance in war and in peace. He graduated in 1947 M.B\, B.S. (Adel). and joined the Citizen Military Forces. He took up appointment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and in 1949 he was sent to Japan for 12 months as part of the Occupation forces. He chose to stay for an additional six months. He was involved in the Korean War 1950/1 assisting with the treatment and medical recovery of wounded troops. Further surgical training was undertaken in England at the College of Surgeons where he juggled his time to pursue a cricketing career. \nDon Beard was made a Fellow Royal College of Surgeons\, Edinburgh\, England and Australasia. In 1962 he was made an Honorary Surgeon at QEH and subsequently became Commanding Officer 3 General Hospital (Colonel). In 1968 he was Surgeon 1 Aust. Field Hospital in Vietnam. He has held numerous positions some of which include\, Consultant Surgeon to Army Office\, Canberra\, Head of Surgical Services\, Modbury Hospital and in 1977 Honorary Surgeon to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. \nBack in Adelaide he became the SACA team doctor\, having a sound relationship with the late Sir Donald Bradman. Following a move to New Guinea he met Margaret Dunn who was to be his future wife. He retired in Adelaide  in 1987as Head of Surgical Services at Modbury Hospital. In that year he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (Military Division). Don has teamed up with former Test Cricketer Ashley Mallett\, who has written the story of Donald Beard\, “ The Digger’s Doctor.” This book was launched in Canberra by Governor General Peter Cosgrove only a few months ago. \nDr. Donald Beard\, now an octogenerian\, is a proud South Australian with a great story to tell.

From there he gained a tertiary qualification and taught high school science for several years before going into full time Christian ministry. His wife Emily has also spent many years in school teaching. Together they have three adult children. \nIn Africa the term “Bishop” often means an overseeing minister\, and that is the case with Michael Musale\, as he supervises five congregations and mentors pastors and other leaders in Kenya and beyond. In 2013 he opened a school that provides free education to poor children in his area of Kenya\, who would otherwise be denied a good quality learning experience. The school commenced as a result of sponsorship gained in Adelaide and Perth\, following a well received speaking tour. Bishop Musale encouraged many groups and churches to consider the nation-building vocation that is a forgotten foundational aspiration enunciated by Governor Arthur Phillip\, in 1788\, at the commencement of modern Australia.
