SUMMARY:Dr. Susan Neuhaus
DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Answering The Call: Australian Women who served in the Great War.” \nDr. Susan Neuhaus is an Australian surgeon\, non-executive director and author. She was one of three finalists for the South Australian nomination for Australian of the Year in 2012. She graduated with MB\,BS in 1989 from University of Adelaide. She obtained Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1993\, and completed her PhD in 2000 from the University of Adelaide\, in the mechanisms of the spread of cancer. She is a graduate of Australian Command & Staff College(Res) and has served in both the Australian Army and Australian Army Reserve in clinical and combat settings. Her operational experience included postings to Cambodia and Afghanistan. She was the first female doctor to be posted overseas from Australia as regimental medical officer in 1993 when she spent 9 months with The United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia\, at the height of the AIDS epidemic. She also served with the Peace Monitoring Group in Bougainville and at a NATO hospital in Afghanistan. She retired from the army in 2011\, having achieved the rank of Colonel. The talk today is focused on Australian women who served. When war was declared in 1914\, hundreds of women answered the call to serve-but their own military told them there was no place for them. Undeterred\, they found other ways\, serving with Allied Forces\, establishing field hospitals on the Western and Eastern Fronts\, and proving that courage and dedication have no gender. This address explores the remarkable stories of Australian women doctors\, nurses and volunteers who served during the Great War-from the Scottish Women’s Hospital at Royaumont to the battlefields of Serbia. Their contributions were often overlooked in official histories\, but their legacy endures. The stories to be related today include service\, sacrifice\, and the quiet determination that has always been part of the ANZAC spirit.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: “Concord to Covid and Beyond” \nIn 1979 Deborah was the subject of the first contested equal opportunity anti-discrimination case in Australia. After more than a year she won the battle against Sir Reginald Ansett in the High Court joining Ansett Airlines to become the first female airline pilot for a major airline in Australia. After the 1989 Pilot’s Dispute\, Deborah relocated to The Netherlands with KLM City hopper. She was Flight Safety Manager and Safety Investigator for 8 years. During this time Deborah was chairman of the European Air Safety Working Group and a member of the IATA Aircraft Accident Classification Working Group. In 2004 Deborah was part of a team commissioned by The Netherlands\, to align the Latvian aviation standards with those of the European Union. In 2008 Deborah returned to Australia as a Captain on the Airbus A320 with Jetstar in Christchurch and in 2012 joined Tiger Air in Sydney as an A320 Check and Training Captain until the airline was shut down in 2020. Deborah currently flies the B737 with Virgin Australia and with over 21\,000 flying hours is the longest flying female airline pilot in the world. Deborah was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2001. She received a Master Air Pilot award in 2017 and was appointed an AM in the General Division of The Order of Australia in 2019 for significant service to aviation as a commercial pilot\, and to women in the profession. She was inducted into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame in 2022 and in November 2023 Sydney Airport named a flyover that connects the International and Domestic terminals in her honour. Deborah has recently published her memoir ‘Touching The Sky’.
