The restaurant and the club are donating to the School Rebuilding Program and it is proposed that $10 per head from the $40 charge will be made as a donation to the Charity. DESCRIPTION:Diane is a retired school teacher/educator. She holds a degree in Education(Flinders University) and a Masters degree in International Education at the University of Alberta\, in Edmonton\, Canada. Her father was a Ukrainian soldier in WW 2 with an English mother. They migrated to Australia in 1957 when Diane was 4 years old .Most of her father’s family are still living in Ukraine and Diane is passionate about helping Ukrainians and supporting those who have been affected by the illegal and Immoral invasion .She has taught English to older displaced people from Ukraine and provided emotional support. Her passion is education and the well being of young people. Diane has established a charity ”Rebuilding Schools Ukraine” which has already raised over $180.000 .Details about the charity can be found at:www.rsu.org.au \nThe club is planning a Sundowner at Carrick Hill on Friday 20th March and Diane will be arranging special Ukrainian Entertainmen\,t Ukrainian Bandura Ensemble.. This will be at the outdoor section of the restaurant. Carrick Hill has agreed to provide a donation from the admission\, and support will also be provided by the Commonwealth Club. \nA separate flyer will be sent to book for the Sundowner. Diane will have a power-point presentation for her talk which will further highlight the extremity of the suffering being endured by the Ukrainian People.

DESCRIPTION:Over a working career spanning more than 25 years\, Phil has worked with some of the world’s most threatened animal and plant species.  He trained as a Bioengineer receiving degrees at both Flinders and Adelaide University\, worked in the forestry industry in New Zealand before returning to Adelaide where he spent over ten years as a senior manager and conservation biologist with the Department of Environment and Water. \nPhil joined Zoos South Australia in 2013 as the Conservation Programs Manager working across both Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park\, moved into a Curator role overseeing the zoos conservation work\, bird\, reptile and native species collections\, then into the Director role of Adelaide Zoo\, and has recently commenced as the 12th Chief Executive of Zoos South Australia. \nHighlights from Phil’s time at Zoos South Australia include establishing the Zoos Pygmy Bluetongue conservation program which resulted in the first breeding of a species under human care that had been presumed extinct until 1992\, achieving the first breeding of Sumatran Tigers at Adelaide Zoo\, and most recently\, securing the on-going presence of Giant Pandas at Adelaide Zoo.

SUMMARY:Henry Olonga - Former International Cricketer and Opera Singer
DESCRIPTION:Henry Olonga is a Zimbabwean former cricketer\, who p[ayed Test and One Day International Cricket for Zimbabwe.  When he made his  Test debut in January 1995\, he was the first and youngest black cricketer to play for Zimbabwe. . Henry was a. regular member of the Zimbabwe team from 1996 to 2003\, playing in 36 Test matches and 50 One Day Internationals.  However his cricket career was terminated when he and teammate Andy Flower wore black armbands in a World Cup match\, protesting against the ‘death of democracy’ and suppression of civil rights under President Robert Mugabe’s government. Henry was charged with treason\, received death threats and was forced into exile in England.  In retirement Henry has pursued  an interest in music. He has composed a number of songs and competed in vocal and charity competitions. Henry made his singing debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground\, singing Nessun Dorma.

He was awarded a Public Service Medal for his role in leading the humanitarian and consular response to the 2009 Pacific tsunami. \nIn April 2020\, Matt was appointed Director of the Australian War Memorial.  \n Matt is married to Lou\, who is a currently serving DFAT Officer and they have 3 children.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Greste is a dual Latvian – Australian academic\, memoirist and writer.   Formerly a journalist and foreign correspondent\, he worked for Reuters\, CNS\, the BBC\, Al Jazeera\, predominantly in the Middle East\, Latin America and Africa.  In December 2013\, Greste and 2 other Jazeera journalists were arrested by Egyptian authorities in Cairo.  Six months later\, Greste was found guilty of falsifying news and having a negative impact on overseas perceptions of the country and sentenced to seven years prison. However the Australian Government intervened and negotiated on his behalf with a new Egyptian government.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Prior was born in rural South Australia and has been a farmer shopkeeper\, librarian and an academic.  Professor Prior was educated at Kapunda High School and at the University of Adelaide where he obtained an Honours Arts degree in 1974 and a PhD in 1979.\nProfessor Prior was a visiting research fellow at the University of Adelaide from 1979 to 1982 and an Australian Research Council Fellow from 1983 to 1985.  In 1986\, he took up a position as lecturer in history at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Professor Prior was promoted Professor and Head of the School of History in 1998\, and in 2005 he was appointed the inaugural Head of the School of Humanities.

SUMMARY:Rod Bunten - Retired UK Diplomat and Teacher - 'The Life of a UK Diplomat'
DESCRIPTION:Rod Bunten grew up in Cornwall and Gloucestershire.  He studied Physics at Oxford University\, before starting a diplomatic career at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  Mr. Bunten undertook successful diplomatic postings in a number of regions\, including New York\, Taiwan and Hong Kong.  During this period Mr. Bunten married Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC who was then an Australian diplomat.  \n  \n In 2009 Mr.  Bunten left the diplomatic service and\, after completing a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education\, commenced a second career as a secondary teacher of physics and mathematics.  His  career was paused in 2015\, when he accompanied Her Excellency to China\, when she was the Australian. Ambassador.  Mr Bunten has also been a tutor to students at the Australian Defence Academy and Canberra University. In 2021 Mr Bunten’s wife was appointed the Governor of South Australia.  They have 4 children and a cavoodle\, ‘Alice’.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Geoffrey Raby is an economist and was Australia’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from 2007 to 2011.  Prior to this appointment\, Dr. Raby held a number of significant ambassadorial positions and several senior positions in DFAT\, including Deputy Secretary from 2002-2006.  After completing 27 years in the public service\, Dr. Raby completed his ambassadorial term and resigned to establish Geoff Raby and Associates\, a Beijing-based business advisory firm. \nIn 2011\, Dr. Raby was awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution in advancing relations between China and Australia and his contribution to multilateral trade negotiations.  Dr. Raby was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by both the Federation University and Latrobe University (his Alma Mater)\, both in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Our Speaker:  Lieutenant Read’s military career began when he entered the Royal Australian Navy as a Boy Seaman in early 1964\, undertaking 2 months training at HMAS CERBERUS in Victoria.  He was then posted to HMAS SYDNEY\, which was readying itself to transport the 1st Battalion RAR to Vietnam\, sailing from Sydney in May 1965. \nAfter a few months in HMAS SYDNEY\, he was posted to HMAS MELBOURNE\, our Fleet aircraft carrier – in which he would serve three times over the course of his full-time-service. \nRon also served for 2 years in the Leander Class Destroyer Escort – HMAS TORRENS. which was seconded to the US Pacific Fleet during the last quarter of 1971. From Pearl Harbor\, TORRENS then proceeded to Vietnam. \nRon was promoted to Signals Petty Officer in June 1974 and to Lieutenant RAN Reserve in March 1979. \nHe is a life-long student of history\, particularly history from the mid-19th century\, which includes the First and Second World Wars\, as well as all the confrontations in which Australia has since been involved. \nLieutenant Read has become a well-known professional military history speaker\, addressing audiences including veteran organizations\, historical societies\, educational institutions\, schools\, corporates and community organizations right across South Australia.

DESCRIPTION:Ben Wadham is a Professor of Defence and Veteran Studies at Flinders University.  Ben is also Director of Open Door: Understanding and Supporting Service Personnel and their Families.  Ben served in the Australian Regular Army for five years as an infantry soldier and military policy corporal\, leaving in 1992.  Ben has led large national research grants on institutional abuse in the Australian Defence Force and Veteran Suicide. Ben established the Military Academic Pathway Program for veterans undertaking university studies after their service.  He is widely published on academic journals and the news media.  Ben provided expert testimony in the Royal Commission. Into Defence and Veteran Suicide.  Ben remains dedicated to veteran and family health as the Vice President of the Defence Welfare Association in South Australia.

Ross has a formal background and qualifications in Psychology. \n\nRoss continues to deepen and extend his understanding of many of the issues he has always been passionate about\, including the social determinants of health\, as he works to assist SACOSS fulfill its aspirational vision – that there is justice\, opportunity and wealth for all South Australians.

Kerryn then transferred to the Defence Industry as an Executive in Industry Associations\, managing teams and projects. In December 2021\, Kerryn joined Legacy South Australia and Broken Hill as Chief Executive Officer and in December 2022 she was appointed a member of the South Australian Veteran’s Advisory Council. \n  \nGraham Ingerson is well known as successful business owner\, consultant\, lobbyist and former Member of State Parliament (where he held a number of Ministries and the position of Deputy Premier.)   Graham’s father served in the Second World War and\, following his father’s death\, the whole family received invaluable advice\, encouragement and monetary support from Legacy. In 1985-6\, Graham was invited to become a Legatee at large\, and he held that position until 2009. Graham has served as a member of the Legacy Board and was elected Chairman in 2021.

Paula has served as a member of the Governing Council of the University of South Australia; the National Advisory Council to the National Breast Cancer Foundation; the Board of the Governor’s Leaders Institute; the Export Council of South Australia and State Opera. Paula has been a Director of the national Foundation ‘Bridging the Gap’ for indigenous related health and education. From1999 to 2006\, Paula served as South Australia’s Honorary Consul for he Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka/.  Paula is the Patron of the Community Television Station C44 and the Poodle Club of SA. In 2013\, Paula was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for her work in the arts\, the community and education.

DESCRIPTION:Samela Harris is a Hall of Fame journalist for whom retirement has been an epic fail!  In a career which began aged 7 writing reviews for her father’s bookshop publication\, Mary’s Own Paper. she has edited Adelaide University’s On Dit;worked for The News on North Terrace; AAP Reuter on Fleet Street; The Evening News in Edinburgh\, The Australianand The Advertiser in Adelaide.  Samela was first woman general reporter on two papers and\, notably\, Australia’s first female Aussie Rules football columnist. \n  \nSamela has written food columns and a cookery book. She’s been a veteran arts editor and founding chair of the Adelaide Critics Circle. Samrla has been there and done that and is still doing it\, running Women In Media SA\, mentoring arts writers for InDaily\, writing art catalogues for joy and recently\, delivering the Adelaide Festival Centre’s 50th Anniversary book.

Jane is now the Chair of the Teachers Registration Board and Chair of the Don Dunstan Foundation\, which researches and promotes ideas on a range of social justice issues.

SUMMARY:The Honourable Alexander Downer AC - 'Is the Commonwealth of Nations fit for purpose?'
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Downer is a member of a very distinguished South Australian family. His grandfather was a senator in the Australian parliament and his father served as a cabinet minister in the Menzies Government and was later Australia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. \nAlexander was educated at Geelong Grammar and Radley College. Shortly after graduating from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as a diplomat in Australian embassies in Belgium and Luxembourg. In 1984 Alexander was elected to the seat of Mayo in the House of Representatives. Alexander rose through the Liberal Party ranks to become leader in 1994\, but resigned this position in 1995 and was replaced by John Howard.   On the election of the Howard Government in 1996\, Alexander was named Minister for Foreign Affairs and he remained in that position until 2007\, becoming Australia’s longest serving foreign minister.   After resigning from parliament\, Alexander was appointed UN Special Adviser to Cyprus\, before serving (like his father) as Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK. Alexander is currently the inaugural Executive Chair of the newly established International School of Government at King’s College\, London.
