Formed in 1910 by Stanley H Skipper, the club follows the tradition of lunch and speaker who is introduced at 1.20pm, speaks for about 30 minutes, with five minutes for questions and closure by 2pm. This has enabled working members to return to work. The most significant luncheon venues have been Adelaide Town Hall, Centennial Hall, Wayville and the Adelaide Oval. The club has had as its guests, Australian Prime Ministers & Governors, many International Visitors of Significance, Academics, Sportsmen, Explorers and Businessmen. Renowned South Australians, Sir Donald Bradman and Sir Douglas Mawson, were Presidents of the Commonwealth club in 1944 and 1946 respectively.

In 2010, to mark the centenary of the club, a book entitled “Commonwealth Club of Adelaide – Memories of the first 100 years“ was launched at a reception in the Adelaide Town Hall by the then Mayor Michael Harbison. The Centenary Luncheon that followed, also in the Adelaide Town Hall, attracted over 300 people to hear noted historian Geoffery Blainey, give the address.

This book covers the history of the club with references to the events of the day, including the Great Depression, Booms & Busts, The Sizzling Sixties, Two World Wars, The Cold War, Korea and Viet Nam and, more recently, the problems in the Middle East. And then into the first decade of the new Millennium. It is, indeed, interesting to note that in the early days speakers were identified through ship’s manifests collected by contacts in Aden and Fremantle. On arrival in Adelaide, usually by ship by train, an invitation was given to speak at a club meeting.

The author and editor, Historian Pamela Oborn, coordinated research and written contributions from a number of other members. Copies are available for purchase from the club secretary.
